God Cannot Be Mocked

"God cannot be mocked!" Gal 6:7

Paul says that between two other sentences in this short verse, "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows."

Paul, writing at this time to the Galatian church, and through the providence of God to all men of all ages is telling us not to be misled when it comes to the justice of God. He will indeed treat us properly for what we do while we are in our fleshly bodies, with either a reward of eternal life or punishment of eternal destruction.

So who is it that we need to be concerned with about being misled? Well, it could be other people who try and get us to live worldly lives, and it could be those who reject God altogether. It could be philosophies and doctrines that water down God's word. There are a lot of outside sources that could mislead us, and try and convince us of something other than what scripture teaches.

But it's not those that worry me. What worries me, is me. How do I handle my shortcomings? Do I repent of sin when I commit it? Do I justify things to myself that God stands opposed to? Am I sowing God's seed? Am I selfish, do I ignore God, do I fail to let God's seed grow in me so that He may reap a harvest from my sowing? Do I pursue my agenda, to please my desires while giving lip service to Him?

Paul here gives us warnings about pursuing things of the flesh with our focus on this life, explaining that God will reign down punishment on such people. He goes on a couple verses later to encourage us, "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers."
