To Know God

Have you ever had one of those friends or people in your life that you know and they know you better than anyone else in the world?  This is one of those people that knows you inside and out personally. They don't just know about you but they truly know you for who you are. I have one of those people in my life, she knows me better than I even know myself sometimes. She knows my likes and dislikes and she knows what makes me tick.  This relationship just didn't happen by accident. We have spent the last 30 years developing our relationship into what it is today.  It is by no means perfect and there are times that we are not as good at our relationship as what we need to be.  There are those times that we neglect to spend the necessary time with one another continuing to get to know one another as we should. I often find that I take the gift of this relationship with her for granted.

We can view our relationship with God in a similar way.  We have to spend time with Him to get to know him on a deeper, more intimate level.  It’s not enough to know about God, we must seek to KNOW him in a way that he already knows us.  He is just waiting for us to go deeper, to make the commitment to the relationship. As we come to know God and seek his will and provision in our life, I do think that we become increasingly aware of His presence.  For example, when our family was raising funds to work in Scotland, we prayed daily to him for specific people and congregations, for an answer to support with either “yes” or “no”;  whatever His will was, that is what we wanted to do.  As days passed and the people we prayed for gave answers both “yes” and “no”, we knew that God was answering our prayers.  When I look at scripture I see David through his Psalms seeking to know God and seeking his presence in his life.  In Psalm 63:1 David says this…”O God you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you in a dry and weary land where there is no water,”  When was the last time we sought the presence of God in our lives like that?  God is close, he is not far off and he longs for you and I to KNOW him!
