Play it Safe

If you drive a car long enough you’re probably going to come across a sign that looks similar to this. Let’s stop and think about what’s going on here.

The sign clearly has two different messages that are in conflict with one another. You’re being told to do two different things when you see it.

So, what do you do?

Is it simply a matter of choice? Do you get to decide for yourself whether you will stop or keep going?

First, consideration must be given to the authority behind the two conflicting messages. Obviously, the governing authorities placed the stop sign there to safely manage traffic flow and keep everyone safe. The other word is nothing more than graffiti and was written by someone with no authority. Second, consideration must be given to the consequences of choosing each option. If you follow the rules of the road and stop then you are playing it safe. If you follow the advice of the local artist, then you are putting yourself and others at risk.

The same considerations need to be taken when asking questions in matters of religion. First, consider the source. Is it from God? Does the practice or teaching have the authority of scripture behind it? Second, consider the risks. If the matter at hand doesn’t have the authority of scripture behind it then it most likely comes from the father of lies, the devil. Even though some religious practices have great appeal to the human mind and spirit doesn’t necessarily mean that they are right.

Matthew 28:18 – “Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.’”

John 9:44 – “…the devil… …was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

2 Peter 2:1-3 – “But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed, they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.”

Mark 9:7 – “And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, ‘This is my beloved Son, listen to Him.’”

Matthew 5:12 – “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven.”

Consider the source. Play it safe.
