Aiming For Our Hearts

Sometimes in a sermon, the preacher may say something about stepping on our toes, or even his own. We use that phrase to define when a biblical message is for us, and one we need to be paying attention to that perhaps we aren't. We know it when we hear those, because we sort of admit to ourselves, 'yes, that's me!' The words may not be easy for us to hear, prompting us to consider our position, yet more often than not, they spur us to take some corrective action.

In a sermon this weekend, I heard this. "When Jesus talks to us through scripture, and He steps on our toes, He's aiming for our hearts!"

We know what that means too, don't we? We should take His teachings to heart and we should willingly modify our ways into His ways, and let such words dwell in us richly (Col 3:16)

When our emotions are triggered by getting our toes stepped on, the correct response would be to remedy the situation, not hunt for steel toed shoes. That's a response driven by Satan.

A preacher friend of mine from almost 40 years ago used to say in his sermons, "if your telephone is ringing, you need to answer, it may be the Lord on the line!"
